High potential and gifted education
Some students learn faster and more easily than others. These students may shine in creativity, thinking, leadership or sport.
At our school, we recognise and nurture these strengths early. We support advanced learners with great lessons and activities to help them grow and thrive.

What is high potential and gifted education?
High potential and gifted education (HPGE) is how our school supports students with advanced learning needs.
We do this through:
- effective teaching strategies like enrichment, extension and acceleration
- tailored support during lessons that stretch, challenge and inspire
- access to a wide range of opportunities both within and beyond our school.
Our high potential and gifted education opportunities
Our students engage with HPGE education in the classroom, in our school, and across NSW.
At Gwandalan Public School, our approach to High Potential and Gifted Education (HPGE) within the classroom focuses on differentiated learning experiences that cater to the diverse needs of our students. Our practices are designed to nurture advanced learners by adjusting pace, complexity, and encouraging higher-order thinking.
Differentiated and Flexible Learning Tasks
We provide tasks that are tailored to individual student readiness, allowing adjustments in pace and complexity. These tasks promote critical and creative thinking through opportunities for abstraction, inquiry, and deeper curriculum engagement. Our programs include meaningful, authentic projects often spanning multiple subject areas to foster cross-curricular connections. Flexible grouping supports collaborative ideation and presentations, enriching peer learning and social interaction.
Targeted Skills Development
Learning goals are personalised to develop coordination, agility, and control, especially in physical activities. Students are encouraged to take leadership roles during physical demonstrations or team strategy sessions, promoting confidence and responsibility.
Explicit Teaching and Formative Assessment
Teaching explicitly focuses on critical thinking and problem-solving strategies, equipping students with tools to approach complex challenges effectively. Formative assessments are systematically used to monitor student growth and adapt learning plans, ensuring progress is both measurable and responsive to individual needs.
Supportive and Safe Learning Environments
We create supportive classrooms where exploration and self-assessment are encouraged. Our educational environment promotes strengths-based feedback and goal setting, helping students recognise and build on their achievements. Safe learning spaces nurture confidence, risk-taking, and perseverance, allowing learners to engage fully without fear of failure.
Collaboration, Leadership, and Reflection
Structured peer collaboration and reflection are integral components, fostering communication and metacognitive skills. Students are provided with opportunities to develop leadership capabilities within the classroom, further enhancing their personal growth and community contribution.
At Gwandalan Public School, our commitment to HPGE ensures that every gifted and high potential student is challenged, supported, and inspired to reach their full potential in both academic and personal development.
At Gwandalan Public School, we offer a diverse range of school-wide programs designed to enrich student learning and foster holistic development. Our extracurricular and enrichment opportunities engage students’ varied interests and talents, promoting academic excellence, creativity, physical wellbeing, and leadership.
Academic and Creative Enrichment
Students can develop their critical thinking and communication skills through our debating teams and academic competitions, providing challenging and motivating experiences beyond the regular curriculum. Creative writing groups nurture imagination and expression, while school CAPA (Creative and Performing Arts) events showcase the talents of our students in drama, dance, and visual arts. Additionally, our students have the opportunity to participate in Star Struck, a prestigious performing arts extravaganza presented by the Newcastle, Hunter, and Central Coast regions of the NSW Department of Education, offering a platform for singing, dancing, and acting at a regional level.
STEM and Technology Engagement
Our STEM and coding programs are vibrant hubs for students interested in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. These programs encourage hands-on learning, problem-solving, and innovation, preparing students for future academic pursuits and careers in technology fields.
Music and Performance Opportunities
Music ensembles, including ukulele groups and choir, provide students with opportunities to collaborate and perform, enhancing musical skills and teamwork. Performance-based movement groups and dance ensembles allow students to explore physical expression and creativity through dance and other forms of movement.
Sport and Physical Activities
Through sport squads and house competitions, students engage in healthy physical activities that foster teamwork, sportsmanship, and physical fitness. These programs support students in developing coordination, agility, and competitive spirit.
Student Leadership, Voice, and Wellbeing
We actively promote student leadership by encouraging involvement in roles that influence school culture and activities. Our Student Voice Team plays a crucial role in representing student perspectives, ensuring their ideas and concerns contribute to decision-making processes across the school. Comprehensive wellbeing programs focus on students’ mental, emotional, and social health, while participation in whole-school inclusion and wellbeing initiatives creates a safe, supportive, and connected learning community.
At Gwandalan Public School, these school-level programs complement classroom learning by providing enriching experiences that build skills, confidence, and a sense of community for every student.
NSW public schools provide a wide range of programs to support student development, growth, and engagement across academic, physical, creative, and leadership domains. These initiatives foster essential skills and offer opportunities for students to excel locally, regionally, and beyond.
Academic and Public Speaking Programs
The Premier’s Spelling Bee promotes vocabulary development and attention to detail in a competitive and supportive environment, helping students refine their literacy skills. The Premier’s Debating Challenge develops students’ ability to build logical arguments and grow confidence in public speaking, vital skills for effective communication and leadership. Additionally, public speaking programs across schools further enhance these abilities, empowering students to express themselves clearly and confidently.
Creative and Performance Opportunities
Students across NSW have the chance to participate in Star Struck, a prestigious performing arts extravaganza presented by the Newcastle, Hunter, and Central Coast regions of the NSW Department of Education. This event offers talented students opportunities to showcase their skills in singing, dancing, and acting on a regional stage.
Sporting and Physical Activity Initiatives
The Premier’s Sporting Challenge (PSC) encourages whole-school participation in physical activity, providing leadership pathways and professional learning opportunities for staff. The Representative School Sport Pathway, along with PSSA and CHSSA events, enables students to trial and compete in a variety of sports at regional, state, and national levels. These programs instil values of discipline, commitment, teamwork, and resilience.
Mentoring and Leadership Development
Mentoring programs connect students with trusted adults, including school alumni, to foster confidence, motivation, and interpersonal skills. These relationships support personal and academic growth, preparing students to take on leadership roles and actively contribute to their communities.
Through these programs and initiatives, NSW public schools create enriching, inclusive environments that support students to thrive, develop new skills, and achieve their full potential.
